Do vitamins really work?

Written by: Crystal Foster

The other day I was in Target and one cashier said to another, "I was thinking about taking vitamins. Do you think they work?" The other cashier just replied no. That had me wondering if she was right.

So I decided to do some research and here's what I found. Medical professionals would prefer that you get your nutrients from food. Your body absorbs nutrients better from food. Unfortunately, not everyone has the type of diet that provides all of the needed nutrients.

If you are a healthy person with a healthy diet, then you shouldn't need to take supplements. But if you're not healthy or dieting, then you may need to take supplements. It's always a good idea to ask your doctor if you have any questions.

Another thing you should keep in mind, is that there's no medical evidence proving supplements can help prevent certain types of diseases. So be weary whenever you see this type of claim. But there are circumstances where some may need to take supplements. Here are four instances.
  • Pregnant women
  • Those who don't get enough exposure to the sun for vitamin D.
  • Senior citizens
  • Vegetarians or Vegans

There may be other circumstances where people may need to take supplements. If you do decide to take them, look for some that are appropriate for your sex and age. Some supplements may be harmful if taken in excess. You should always speak to your doctor to find out if they are right for you or if you have any questions.
