How To Take Care Of Your Overwashed Hands

Written by: Crystal Allen-Foster

With me having to wash my hands about 20 times a day, I noticed that they were becoming pretty chapped. But I'm sure that during this Pandemic, that I'm not alone. Like with everything else, the best defense is to prevent the damage. But if you can't prevent it, then you need to take steps to repair.

Having dry and cracked skin will also burn when you use an alcohol based hand sanitizer. I looked up some tips for the care of your hands, since we all are washing them excessively now a days. As a result, I found 5 things you can do to help your chapped hands. Here is a list of tips.

  1. Use a moisturizing soap.
  2. Blot your hands dry, instead of rubbing them.
  3. Use warm water instead of hot. Hot water drys out your skin.
  4. Apply moisturizer, preferably hand cream right after you wash your hands. Hand creams tend to be oil based instead of water based.
  5. Substitute hand washing for hand sanitizer some of the times you need your hands cleaned.

Keep in mind that the best way to keep your hands clean during these times, is to wash with water and soap. Since hand sanitizer is hard to find now, we only use it when we're out of the house. I will also carry a couple of Bleach Wipes with me when I go out so that I can wipe the handle on shopping carts or to grab a door handle at the store. This is a safety precaution that also stops us from having to use as much hand sanitizer. We all know that the current situation is temporary, but none the less, we still need to take care of ourselves.
